Restoring Hope And Rebuilding Caring Communities

Shreveport and Bossier City

Cynthia Beadle - Director of Finance

[email protected]

After a 30-year career in accounting, Cynthia came to Community Renewal in 2011. “I had been praying for a job where I could serve people instead of serving the ‘bottom line’ of the company. I finally found my dream job at Community Renewal.” Cynthia first fell in love with Community Renewal through a tour where she saw the work at a Friendship House first-hand. “I could see that the children were nurtured and loved at the Friendship House, and the Community Coordinators were totally involved in teaching and leading them to care more about themselves and their neighborhood.”

Cynthia is a graduate of Belhaven University with a B.S. in Accounting, and of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary with a Master of Religious Education. She worked for non-profits for ten years in Texas before coming to the Shreveport-Bossier area. Cynthia’s strengths are spreadsheets, databases and streamlining computer and accounting procedures. She is the pastor’s wife and organist at the First Baptist Church in Benton, and enjoys Bible teaching, stitching, writing and music.

DeCedric Bowman - Allendale Community Coordinator, Youth

[email protected]

DeCedric Bowman recognized a deep need for strong male mentors in the lives of young people—and he knew he had to act. That conviction led him to his role as Community Coordinator for the Allendale Friendship House, where he now leads youth programs with passion and purpose.

“Statistics say these kids are not going to be anything because of where they are from and how they were raised. And I want to help,” said DeCedric, a skilled welder and mechanic who proudly calls himself a jack of all trades.

“I want to make sure they know they are not counted out. They can still make it. Regardless of what people may say, they are able.”

DeCedric and his wife have four children, and he brings the same love and care he gives his family into his work in the neighborhood.

Raised by a single mother and his grandmother, DeCedric carries the values they taught him into every relationship he builds at the Friendship House.

“I want to make sure all these kids know that if they don’t have a father figure in their life, I am here for them,” he said. “I am so determined. With God on our side, nothing is impossible. We are going to get it done.”

With a heart for mentoring and a mission fueled by faith, DeCedric is helping reshape the future for the youth of Allendale—one relationship at a time.

Sherry Brown - Volunteer & Service Project Coordinator

[email protected]

Sherry’s journey with our team began in 2002, inspired by her longtime mentor, Jewel Mariner. “I wanted meaningful work helping people,” she says. “It doesn’t even feel like a job.” From day one, she poured her heart into working with teenagers, their families, and neighbors in Allendale—a neighborhood that has seen a remarkable transformation thanks to partnerships with The Fuller Center for Housing, First United Methodist Church, AEP SWEPCO, and others.

In 2015, Sherry took her passion for people to the next level, becoming our Volunteer and Service Project Coordinator. A proud U.S. Air Force veteran, she now connects mission-minded groups for one-time or ongoing projects and matches dedicated individuals with opportunities in our six target neighborhoods—home to Friendship Houses and Adult Renewal Academy classes.

Her story started on the basketball court, where she earned a scholarship to Cleveland State Community College. Soon after, she served five and a half years in the Air Force as an aircraft pneudraulic systems specialist, earning the Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal–Desert Storm, and Longevity Service Award.

For Sherry, service is more than a job—it’s a calling. As the proud mother of two sons, she says her goal has always been “to be an example to them by serving others.”

Sherry’s life is a powerful example of leadership, service, and heart. From the basketball court to the Air Force, from neighborhood revitalization to volunteer coordination, she has spent her life building people up and inspiring others to get involved. Her story reminds us that when we serve with passion and purpose, the impact can transform lives—including our own.

CaRonda Drew - MLK Community Coordinator, Children

With a heart for children and families, CaRonda is focused on nurturing the next generation through compassion, consistency, and care. Her goal is to help build a strong sense of identity and confidence in the kids she serves.

“I want them to know they can—do whatever it is they desire and be whomever they want to be. There are no limits. Anything is possible,” she says. CaRonda’s presence in the community reflects a deep belief in the power of love to transform lives and open up new possibilities. She creates safe, encouraging spaces where children can dream, grow, and thrive.

Patrick Drew - MLK Community Coordinator, Youth

[email protected]

Patrick Drew has come full circle in Shreveport’s Martin Luther King Jr. neighborhood—the very community where he was born and raised. Once known for making poor choices in his youth, Patrick now stands as a powerful example of redemption and purpose. As a Community Coordinator at the MLK Friendship House, he leads the Youth Club, mentoring young people and helping them make life-affirming decisions. A recent graduate of the Adult Renewal Academy, Patrick sees his work as a divine calling: “I used to tear down the neighborhood, and now I’m part of building it back.”

Patrick is deeply passionate about seeing people grow—mind, body, and spirit. Whether he’s educating others on healthy eating and growing their own food, serving as a TBRI (Trust-Based Relational Intervention) practitioner, or sharing an encouraging word that uplifts spiritually, his goal is to empower and restore. Patrick believes lasting change happens through active presence, real relationships, and genuine love for people.

I truly love this community, the people, the culture, the pace, the tennis, and the food, of course! I believe our community holds much promise and potential to be a light and a beacon of hope impacting this region and our country. I am grateful to be a part of this amazing team and the dynamic movement of Community Renewal both locally and nationally."

Sabrina Henderson - Queensborough Community Coordinator, Children

[email protected]

Sabrina reaches out to the children and their families in the Queensborough neighborhood, which has a history of low-income, high-crime problems to overcome. Sabrina and her husband have four children of their own and Sabrina wants the best for the neighborhood children just as much as she does for her own. "I have a heart for these children in the inner-city. I hope to give them confidence. I want them to know they can achieve things and have success," she says.

Cortland is passionate about inspiring others to take action and be a part of building caring communities where everyone belongs.

Michael Leonard - Executive Coordinator

[email protected]

At one time, Dr. Mike Leonard’s only plan for the future was to one day move from practicing dentistry to practicing his golf swing. “I wanted to play the top 100 golf courses in the United States,” he said. But after volunteering with Community Renewal, and a growing friendship with CRI Founder Mack McCarter, the course of his life took a different path. In 2005, he left his dental practice of 24 years and joined the Community Renewal team as associate coordinator. “I was scared because it was an unknown chance. I had talked a lot about faith and now God was giving me an opportunity to practice some! Now, 20 years later, I can say beyond a shadow of doubt, that it was the best decision of my life.” Mike attended LSU, where he lettered three years as a defensive back on the Tigers football team, and was named to the SEC All-Academic Team. He graduated from the LSU School of Dentistry in 1981. He has been named SB Magazine Favorite Dentist and won The Times Unsung Hero Award for his community involvement. Mike has also been elected to the 2025 C.E. Byrd High School Hall of Fame.

Nina Marie - Community Liaison

[email protected]

Nina MarieNina Marie, our new community liaison, reaches out to current and potential partners – businesses, churches and other organizations – to build the network of caring in our area.

“My tagline is unity in the community. I have a passion for community development and this was such a good fit for me. I’ve done a lot of legwork getting to know people in the community, building on relationships that I had and forming new ones,” she said.

Nina is a native of Michigan who came south to attend Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, graduating with a degree in business management. She was introduced to Community Renewal by her parents, who both worked with the Adult Renewal Academy.

Nina would like to see an actively used community calendar, more community events and greater awareness when there is a need for volunteers.

“We want safer neighborhoods and stronger communities. I’m excited about this and looking forward to what God is doing. If you are interested in being involved, please reach out."

Liz Mathews - Administrative Assistant

[email protected]

Liz first found out about Community Renewal through her mom, Dianne Loridans, who was an employee at the organization. Later, Liz started volunteering at Community Renewal and then became a full-time employee. Liz graduated from BPCC with a degree in 3-D Animation and uses her design skills to help everyone and everything look better! “I like doing graphic work more than anything else.” Liz believes that Community Renewal’s mission is an important “inter-social service” that sets the organization apart from other non-profits. Not only is she helping make a difference here, but the organization has made a difference in her. “It’s definitely improved my own social skill sets and that’s not something that comes naturally to me.”

David McCarter - Associate Coordinator

Pam Morgan - Allendale Community Coordinator, Children

[email protected]

Pam's journey came full circle in January 2017 when she was promoted to Community Coordinator for the Kids Club in the Allendale neighborhood — the same place she once called home, living in a small “shotgun house.” A true CRI success story, Pam brings a wealth of knowledge about Allendale and its residents, along with a deep commitment to “meet and greet” both new and familiar faces in the community.

Before stepping into her current role, Pam served faithfully as a neighborhood ambassador and now coordinates a variety of activities at the Friendship House. Her dedication doesn’t stop there — she has also volunteered with her church and partnered with impactful programs like the YWCA, Volunteers of America, and the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana.

Pam’s story is one of resilience, dedication, and the power of giving back to the very place that shaped her.

DeTrevon Moore - Cedar Grove Community Coordinator, Youth

[email protected]
DeTrevon Moore knows what it means to grow up in a close-knit neighborhood — because he lived it. Raised in Shreveport, he cherished the simple joys of being a “neighborhood kid”: riding bikes, playing outside with friends, and learning life lessons in the streets and schools of his community.

A natural leader from a young age, DeTrevon graduated in the Top 5 of his 2013 class at Booker T. Washington High School, where he served as student body president and captain of the football team. Now, he’s pouring that same energy and leadership back into his hometown as the Community Coordinator of the Cedar Grove Friendship House.

“A lot of our youth are focused on the wrong thing and they have a lot of negative energy,” he says. “My goal is to re-prime the minds of our youth to focus on bigger and better things that are beneficial to them and the community. We want them to have a positive outlook on life.”

His passion is building something bigger than a program — it’s about building a movement. “We want the neighborhood to function as a family where everybody is involved,” DeTrevon explains. “I believe in a community in motion. I’m very excited about the possibilities.”

At home, DeTrevon and his wife, Jasmine, are raising four beautiful children — three boys and one girl — and continuing their mission to create a better future, starting with family and reaching across generations.

Antoinette Needhom - Barksdale Annex Community Coordinator, Children

[email protected]

Through her teenage years, Antoinette Needhom faced the same uphill battle again and again — a fight against the hopelessness that seemed to pull her under. “I was in a dark place and I started searching for a way to cope,” the Shreveport native recalled.

After her first attempt to earn a high school diploma ended in disappointment, Antoinette wrestled with fears of living alone and failing her children. She knew something had to change before it was too late. That turning point came when a friend told her about Community Renewal’s Adult Renewal Academy (ARA).

With a renewed determination — and now married — Antoinette and her husband enrolled in ARA classes, graduating together in 2021. “They helped me learn how to dream again and have hope for a better community and a better life,” she said.

Her journey didn’t stop there. With the support of mentors and a new sense of purpose, Antoinette became the Allendale neighborhood ambassador, and later, the community coordinator at the Barksdale Annex Friendship House, where she oversees the Kids Club.

Her mission is deeply personal. “I pray that they will never lose the desire to learn because education is the master key to many things in life,” she said. “I pray that my testimony will inspire them and encourage them to do the right thing. I pray they can reach whatever dream they have regardless of whatever odds might be stacked against them. I want them to be encouraged and be involved in the community because we are better together.”

Antoinette’s story is a powerful testament to perseverance, faith, and the life-changing impact of community. From overcoming deep personal struggles to becoming a leader who pours hope into the next generation, she proves that no matter the odds, dreams can be restored — and when people come together, they can build a brighter future for everyone.

Robert Odom - Program Assistant

[email protected]

Although Robert was born in Dallas, he’s spent most of his life in Shreveport. Before joining the CRI team, Robert worked in management for McDonald’s restaurant and served in the Army National Guard. Robert found CRI through a non-profit employment agency and worked as a full-time volunteer for two years before being hired on as a full-time employee. What he enjoys most about his work is the relationships with his co-workers, “I like the way people stick by you no matter what.” Robert has spent over 21 years at CRI and hopes to continue working here until he retires. He describes his career at CRI as a “pleasant experience” and firmly believes that “Community Renewal may be the path towards world peace.”

Janah Riles - Assistant to Director of Friendship House

[email protected]

Janah Riles serves as the Assistant to the Director of the Friendship Houses for Community Renewal International, where she is a key force behind the scenes keeping the ministry running smoothly. She provides essential administrative and organizational support to Director Deidra and the Community Coordinators, helping manage schedules, events, communications, and resources that keep each Friendship House active and effective.

Janah’s attention to detail and ability to keep complex projects moving make her an indispensable part of the team. Beyond her administrative skills, she brings a deep passion for serving others—whether supporting women’s health initiatives, building relationships with the CRI network, or ensuring children have safe spaces to learn and grow. A former summer camp counselor, she understands the power of encouragement and community connection. Through her role, Janah helps equip leaders, strengthen neighborhoods, and advance the We Care Friendship House mission of building caring, connected communities.

Deidra Lewis-Robertson - Director of Friendship House

[email protected]

Deidra Robertson grew up in the Martin Luther King area of Shreveport, where she witnessed many of her neighbors fall into drugs and delinquent behavior. “I’ve always had this ‘save the world’ mentality,” she said. “I thought it was my mission to save kids from that kind of future.”

After graduating from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, Robertson interned with the Lafayette Police Department, where she discovered that police work wasn’t her calling. Instead, while volunteering at a church summer camp, God gave her a vision similar to the Operation H.O.P.E. program — a vision she still holds dear to her heart today. “I don’t look at it as a job, it’s really a kingdom assignment,” she says.

Today, Robertson serves as the Director of the Friendship Houses at Community Renewal International, where she leads with compassion, strength, and vision. Her life and work have become a living example of perseverance and service. Recently, she achieved another milestone — earning her Master’s in Public Administration from Grambling State University. Balancing the demands of leadership, family, and community work, she pressed forward with determination and grit, showing the people she mentors what’s possible when you stay committed, even when the journey is tough.

Deidra Robertson is proof that no obstacle is too great when purpose fuels your path. From the streets where she once dreamed of saving lives to the classrooms and communities where she now changes them, her journey is a testament to faith, resilience, and the power of never giving up. She not only leads — she inspires a generation to rise higher, dream bigger, and believe that with God, all things are possible.

Tina Sheffield - Barksdale Annex Community Coordinator, Youth

[email protected]

Tina began serving as the Community Coordinator for youth in the Barksdale Annex neighborhood of Bossier City in 2002. Before stepping into this role, she retired from the U.S. Air Force after 21 years of service, achieving the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. Throughout her military career, she supervised Airmen and also served as a Drill Instructor for the Caddo Commission’s Specialized Treatment and Rehabilitation (S.T.A.R.) Program, where she worked closely with children.

Her education includes an Associate Degree in Logistics Management from the Community College of the Air Force and an Associate of Applied Science from Henderson County Junior College. She is a recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal, the Commendation Medal, and the Senior Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year Award.

Tina treasures her work at the Friendship House. “We pray with people, get to know them and their needs, strengths, fears, and what they would like to see in our neighborhood. I’ve seen changes for the good,” she says.

Le'Andrea Taylor - Queensborough Community Coordinator, Youth

[email protected]

Le’Andrea Taylor’s journey from the basketball court to the corner of Queensborough is nothing short of a calling.

With a heart for youth and a deep desire to make a difference, Le’Andrea has brought her passion and purpose to the Queensborough Friendship House.

A native of Mooringsport, Le’Andrea graduated from Northwood High School, earned a degree in psychology, and proudly served in the U.S. National Guard for 10 years. Every step of her path has equipped her for the work she’s doing now in one of Shreveport’s most vibrant neighborhoods.

“I asked God to put me in a place to make a difference, and now my prayers are coming to pass. I know that with God I will succeed,” she shares.

Le’Andrea is a devoted mother to two teenage daughters and wife to James, a skilled local car mechanic. Her passion for mentorship and community support is deeply rooted in her own experiences.

“Coming into the Friendship House, I am very excited because I want to make a difference when it comes to kids. My goal for the Queensborough neighborhood is to build their self-esteem and let them know they are wanted. I want them to go to the next level,” she says.

That passion for young people began years ago when, at just 19 years old, she founded Midnight Madness, a nonprofit basketball team designed to keep kids off the streets at night.

“One of the things about Community Renewal that really touched my heart was they were doing things that I was doing. When I was about 19, I started a nonprofit basketball team to keep kids off the street at nighttime. It was called Midnight Madness and while I was doing that, I was introduced to Community Renewal.”

Today, as continues her role in the Friendship House, Le’Andrea brings with her a powerful belief in the strength of community.

“I really believe knowing your neighbor is very important. By knowing and having a friendship with your neighbor, you can protect each other from things. If I know you are watching out for me, that makes me feel more safe when I am home alone with my girls.”

Le’Andrea is more than a leader—she is a neighbor, a mentor, and a light of hope for the youth of Queensborough.

Rebecca is often referred to as one of the most “overqualified” employees at CRI.  “This position has given me the opportunity to get out of the house and back to making a difference in the community.”  Despite only being a CRI employee for a couple of years, Rebecca has enthusiastically volunteered her services and time to assist with the annual Croquet Classic, Circle of Caring meetings, Renewal Team events at community events, Haven House events, office meetings and events, as well as assisting Community Coordinators in the Friendship Houses.  Rebecca works effortlessly to maintain a professional-looking office space and works tirelessly to create a positive first impression for staff and visitors.

Julie Turnbow - Finance Coordinator

[email protected]

Julie joined the staff at Community Renewal in April of 2024.  “I had not been working during a season of caring for my parents, but as that season came to a close, I knew I wanted to get involved somewhere and use the gifts and talents the Lord blessed me with. I had also been wanting to help bring positive change to our community somehow. Through a “God connection,” I was able to join the staff here at Community Renewal. After participating in the “CRI Experience,” I was blown away by the vision and mission of this organization-the people, the purpose, the heart for not only our community, but the world, as well as a heart for growing the Kingdom of God.”

She is a Certified Public Accountant, and in her 35-year career has worked in public accounting, governmental accounting and internal auditing, and most recently, after staying at home to raise her 3 daughters for 13 years, helped to manage her and her husband’s gas station and convenience store business-all in the Shreveport-Bossier area.  Julie enjoys her day to day accounting duties and working with her amazing CRI family!   Her favorite things to do are spending time with her husband, three daughters, and 2 sons-in-law as well as traveling and reading and studying the Bible.

Michelle Walter - Cedar Grove Community Coordinator, Children

[email protected]

Since 2002, Michelle has been a steady force of love and leadership at Community Renewal. Starting as a receptionist, she’s grown into her calling as the Community Coordinator for the Cedar Grove Kids Friendship House — walking alongside generations of families and making a deep impact.

“You start with the kids,” Michelle shares, “the kids become adults, and the lessons they have learned at their Friendship House will make for a better, safer neighborhood.”
Her heart for transformation runs deep. Before joining Community Renewal, Michelle served the City of Shreveport in both the Community Services and Code Enforcement departments, gaining valuable experience that would later fuel her outreach work. She also holds an Associate of Applied Science degree from Southern University.

What drives Michelle isn’t titles or recognition — it’s the kids. “I like the fact that I have the opportunity to make an impact on young children’s lives to make them better citizens,” she says. “I don’t want to just be a part of another program. I want to be somebody who truly cares. I want to know their dreams and goals and help them reach those goals. I want to be able to go to their high school graduation and see them succeed in life.”

In Michelle’s world, it’s not just about changing neighborhoods — it’s about changing lives. One child, one family, one dream at a time.

Daniels Flowers - Neighborhood Ambassador

Daniels FlowersDaniels Flowers was born in Southeast, Washington, D.C.

Underneath the mask I wore to get along in my neighborhood. To navigate my constantly changing city. Laid love, hopes and dreams for togetherness. Even in my trials and tribulations. I believe we can have that, not just in my neighborhood. But every neighborhood, every community, every city, every state, every country. Life is so precious to me now, knowing I have an opportunity to help change our world. Community Renewal has been a Godsend. Meeting Mack McCarter and all the Community Renewal Family has sparked a new purpose for my life.

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The Life I now live in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Galatians 2:20

Bari Hochwald-Cagnola - Associate Coordinator Capital Area

The necessity of growing the We Care Team is reflected in the heart of all her arts programming and teaching in the states and internationally. In 2024 she was designated as a Fulbright Scholar to practice and teach this work in Bratislava, Slovakia. In joining Community Renewal Capital Area (CRCA), Bari works with Mack on the various needs of the growth and direction of CRI as well as supporting the development of CRCA and our international work.

Prior to working with CRCA and CRI Bari was an actress in theatre and television, a stage director and producer, and university instructor. She lived abroad in Florence, Italy where she founded and ran Florence International Theatre Company (2005) working to integrate the various communities who shared the city through arts and educational projects and initiatives. Bari then returned to the US where she founded The Global Theatre Project in 2011, managing programs internationally and nationally, often producing events which involved hundreds of people in two countries and multiple languages.

Ira Mathis - Neighborhood Ambassador

Ira MathisDriven by a passion for community development and empowerment, I am currently thriving in my role at Community Renewal Capital Area where I have had the privilege of making a positive impact for the past year. Transitioning from a 23 year career as an HVAC technician, I am grateful for the opportunity to channel my skills and dedication into meaningful community work. My journey has equipped me with a unique blend of technical expertise and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by underserved communities because I am a product of that type of community growing up in Woodland Terrace. Every day, I strive to foster an inclusive environment where individuals can thrive, and neighborhoods can flourish.

Throughout my professional journey, I have learned that true change starts at the grassroots level. My experience in the HVAC industry taught me the importance of resilience and problem solving, qualities that I now apply to my work in community renewal. I am dedicated to building strong relationships, enhancing community resources, and creating sustainable initiatives that uplift those around me. As I continue to grow in this role, I remain committed to collaborating with fellow advocates and takeholders to drive lasting change. Together, we can turn visions into reality and create stronger, more vibrant communities for all.
